President’s Update on Fire around Copeway Lake

In the past 24 hours concerns about the fire just south of Copeway Lake and just south west of Lake of Islands is causing our community concerns.  It is good that we are all attuned to this fire and its possible consequences.

I had a discussion today with the MNR Fire Information Officer.  He reassured me that at this time there is very low concern that Fire HAL018 in the Haliburton Fire District near Coleway Lake and about 6km from Lake of Islands would spread.  The reason being is that they say the fire is surrounded by water.

Yesterday they water bombed the area and they will do so again if required.  Currently there are ground crews in the area actively fighting the fire.  As posted on the facebook page of the Marmora and Lake Fire Department, they request no drones in the area and the Tomahawk ATV Trail is currently closed to public access.

The Fire Information Officer took my contact information and will pass it directly on to the Haliburton Fire District Office and I will be contacted directly if there is any change.

I strongly encourage our community to follow the fire status using the following government link and select “Interactive Fire Map” to be provided with accurate information.’

I continue to ask our community to be diligent in following the Marmora and Lake Fire Ban dictates.  It takes only a spark.
