Eurasian Water Milfoil

IMPORTANT SURVEY NOTICE – July 9th and 10th, 2025

As you have been made aware in previous correspondence and articles on the Shawano website and through email communiques, the Shawano Lake water system has a Eurasian Water Milfoil

(EWM) invasive species issue that has been steadily increasing over the past several years. Neighbouring lakes also report the similar issues.

THIS IS WHY CLEAN, DRAIN, DRY your boat is so very important.

The Lake Stewardship Committee has engaged the services of a mapping consultant to help assess the extent of the invasion and help plan for possible interventions. As we’ve previously advised our community, once EWM is in the lake, it is impossible to get rid of it. Therefore, our future focus will be on how to control its spread.

NOTICE

On July 9th and 10th the Lake Stewardship Committee will be conducting a survey the lakes. This will involve observing, raking and recording of milfoil infestations. We will be surveying the perimeters of both Dickey Lake and Lake of Islands as well as the channel ponds where EWM has already been reported. This process will be conducted close to the shorelines as that is where milfoil is most readily observed (4 to 10 feet of water).

If you rent your home, please let your renters know that this will be happening. This mapping will provide us with the information we need to proceed in an informative manner with our community. The survey results will be made available to our community on our Shawano website in the late summer or early fall.

Please stay tuned for more information to come.
