The municipality of Marmora and Lake bylaw state no person shall allow their dog to run at large. This means in a place other than the owner’s property. All dogs must be on a leash when off their owner’s property.

Boats: Keep a safe distance from shore to avoid underwater rocks and to reduce shoreline erosion. The speed limit is 10 km/h within 30 meters of shore. Keep speeds reasonable and avoid large wakes by not allowing your boat to plow. When you launch your boat make sure to wash it down thoroughly to prevent the introduction of zebra mussels into our lakes.

Snowmobiles: Our local club is the Old Hastings Snow Riders. Please check out their site for more information.

Ice Safety Guidelines

Always remember that ice is never completely safe. Conditions can change quickly and there are many unpredictable factors. Use the ice at your own risk.

General Safety Tips

  • Never go out on the ice alone — always travel with at least one other person.
  • Inspect ice conditions visually from shore before venturing out.
  • Watch for warning signs such as open water, slushy areas, or large pressure cracks.
  • Check with local authorities for up-to-date ice condition reports.
  • On unfamiliar waterways, test the ice near shore using an auger or axe before going further.
  • Always let someone know your exact destination and expected return time.

Ice Thickness Guidelines (New, Clear Ice)

  • Less than 3 inches: Unsafe — stay off
  • 4 inches: Safe for ice fishing, walking, and cross-country skiing
  • 5 inches: Safe for snowmobiles and ATVs
  • 8 to 12 inches: May support a small car

Note: These are general guidelines based on new, clear ice. Conditions can vary widely depending on temperature, water currents, snow cover, and time of season.
